Never underestimate the importance of basics. As well as for personal life, this goes for the working environment too.
Let’s be clear on one point: you cannot pretend running Formula One if you are not even good at driving a runabout.
Sometime this happens just out of ignorance, literally; the Managers of these kind of companies simply have not deemed necessary studying or applying fundamental rules. Sometime this happens because of arrogance, pretending to possess adequate skill while they don’t even wonder go studying . Be as it may, the results are always catastrophic: these kind of companies end up being classified as incoherent, inadequate, sloppy.
Trust and credibility vanishes and potential customer, once they spot them out, just flees away.
I keep on coming across companies in different industries which fall on the same terrible mistake: ignoring basics. These sort of companies or professional who simply should not be where they are because they don’t “walk the talk”.
My humble suggestion to you is: when you engage someone either for personal or professional matter, do pay attention on basics:
the way introduce themselves, the way they communicate both in contents and method, the environment they foster and encourage within their company, general form of respect towards others.
The more complex or big is the company, more complicated might be for you to spot; however, keeping it simple make your life easier and prevent hopefully bad surprise later.
Always ask for a preliminary interview and assay the basic: communication (method and content), manners and politiness, cross check with FACTS and DATA (and not just with feelings) what they promulgate versus what they actually do. If your gut raises some kind of uncomfortable feelings or sense of dystonia, walk away: rest assured, your gut is suggesting you something beyond and above your expectations
Finally, some real life examples.
“I will call you tomorrow”, then disappear; real life, trust me and to make the matter worse, is from a pseudo Consultant in coaching!
“We are a green company”. Nice green tress painted on the wall, eco shop within the company and few fitness tools around; when it comes to real green approach, however, such as remote working (where applicable, of course), they don’t even know how to respond to their employees.
I am sure that hundred of examples can be listed to this regard and you can appreciate thinking when you faced similar situation; I am sure you can also feel the sense of proud and happiness when you fled away for these sort of phonies; or when, God forbid, you had to regret your trust being misplaced.
Good news is that consciousness is spreading around and, if we all pay more attention, we’ll get two bird with one stone: make good ad solid companies flourishing and phonies out in the land of nowhere.
Good luck and have a good one.
Lorenzo
